The first version of the story of Puss in Boots was published between 1550-1553 by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, in this version however Puss has no footwear and is actually a fairy in disguise! The story was called "Constantino Fortunato" or Lucky Constantino.

The version of the character as we know him took shape and donned his boots in the 1697 publication of "Histoires ou contes du temps passé" a collection of fairy tales written by Charles Perrault. Here the story was called Le Maître Chat or The Master Cat.

It wasn't until the story was translated to English in 1729 that the name Puss in Boots was used!
