A molcajete is a traditional mexican version of a mortar and pestle made from basalt! A molcajete can be used to crush and grind spices as well as for the preparation of salsas and guacamole. The bowl of this brooch is filled with all the ingredients needed to make a delicious guacamole.
 
Sometimes an animals head is carved into a Molcajete as a form of decoration, the most common animal depicted being a pig!
