In his hand he's holding a bundle of birch branches for the purpose of swatting people on the naughty list! 
He also features a basket on his back which is used to cart away misbehaving children!

If the promise of presents isn't a good enough reason to behave throughout the year then the fear of the Krampus certainly is!
